A Comparison Between Private and Univesity Hall

Heading off to a university is one of the biggest steps of your life. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be difficult which is why looking for accommodation is one of the most crucial steps. There are two types of housing broadly, private and University halls. Universities for their new students will usually opt for university halls but it’s not the only option. Private halls are also a good alternative. You can broadly decide your accommodation on 5 factors: Location, Bathrooms, Facilities, Cost and Social life.

LOCATION:

A prime location that is close to your university, safe at odd hours and easily commutable. University halls are mostly on campus or very close to the main buildings. Private halls, on the other hand, are found in the center of the town or city where you are studying. You have a wider choice of housing. But first and foremost, whatever you decide, don’t forget to visit the location first.

BATHROOMS:

Sanitation and hygiene are not something to compromise on. University halls are usually a shared space, which could mean, you’ll also be sharing a bathroom. For some, it could be an uncomfortable situation as there are possibilities of having a common space for boys & girls. With the limited number of bathrooms and showers. In private halls, en-suite bathrooms are a given. Though it also depends on your flatmates and their usage of the bathrooms. Also how often the cleaners come. But it’s a known fact that private hall bathrooms are a lot cleaner than university hall bathrooms.

FACILITIES:

For starters, we must keep in mind that no two halls are the same. University halls will offer you a bed, a bathroom, cooking facilities, with the additional utilities of gas, electricity, etc. and internet access included in the price. Additional facilities like WiFi, laundry, security, cleaners, and insurance can be expected but not a compulsion. But be beware that these amenities are not changed on a yearly basis. They are old and have been used by students prior to you. Private halls will also offer you the same amenities but with added luxuries. Luxuries like satellite TV, gyms, car parking, common rooms and pool tables are very common in private halls. All the amenities here tend to be much newer and in better shape. They have the added perk of cleaning and maintenance services as well. With the added cost both the halls will provide meals as well.

COST:

University halls are more basic with minimalistic costs and living in university halls are decent if nothing luxurious. University halls under some circumstances can delay your first month’s rent until your student finance arrives. Private halls often have modern facilities with added luxury. Which tends to make it more expensive, but worth the money. Private halls give you the advantage of separate tenancy agreements and you are not liable to replace a flatmate that decides to leave. It also comes with an added advantage of all your utility bills included. In the end, what’s more important is planning and knowing what you are paying and how long you have the place for.

SOCIAL LIFE:

Social life or socializing becomes a vital part of your university life. University halls are usually packed with freshers, who are equally new, scared and confused as you are. Private halls usually have a mixture of undergraduates, postgraduates, and overseas students who may be studying at completely different universities or the same. A bonus advantage of hosting an ample number of parties and gatherings are also included. In the end, moving away from home and staying by yourself will have a major impact on your experience as you begin your student years.
