To-do list when students move to the UK
Moving to a whole new country can be not just exciting and scary but profuse. As a student always remember to be prepared before stepping into your university years. If you are moving to the UK, here are a few pointers that you need to take into account before you start your journey:
1 Opening a bank account:
You can not open a bank account in the UK unless you arrive there. But it is the first and foremost thing to do because it’s the most secure way to keep your money. The bank procedure and documentation may take a few weeks, therefore, make sure to have enough funds to keep you going those weeks. Different banks have different requirements to open an account, make sure to check them individually before proceeding. Usually the bank requires your passport and introductory documentation from your university that states your personal details and the course you are perusing. You can also seek help from your university student union for more details.
2 Travel discount cards:
When you move to a new country, you are bound to explore. You might as well make some considerable savings and make a travel budget. A Railcard or a Coach card, Oyster card, International Student Identity Card (ISIC) are a few cards with which you can avail discounts on your travel. As a university student make complete use of all your student discounts and perks. You can buy these cards online or offline at your convenience. You only require your student ID to avail of these cards.
3 Mobile phones:
Buying a cell phone can be cheap if you don’t already have one. But the network and internet charges could be expensive, especially if you are calling another country. The operators in the UK work on the GSM band as most of the world but don’t forget to double-check if your existing phone supports it. a very natural mistake that you may tend to make is to keep your existing SIM card on your mobile phone when you are living in the UK. This mistake can make a big hole in your pocket as you may end up paying extremely high charges for calling not just your family and friends in the other country but local numbers as well.
Don’t forget that you can always contact your local guardian or any other management team who will be very happy to help. Be safe and enjoy your fresh start in life.
